Humans of UiPath: Inside the life of a Transformation Sales Director

Sean Dunphy

What does it take to lead transformational change through AI-powered automation in a fast-evolving global company? Meet Sean Dunphy, one of our Transformation Sales Directors—a seasoned professional with extensive experience in digital transformation. In this post, we’ll explore his personal and professional journey, exploring his career journey and what it takes to succeed in this dynamic role.

Sean’s experiences across diverse cultures have deeply influenced his perspective. This foundation has proven to be very valuable in his professional journey, allowing him to skillfully navigate complex international landscapes.

Can you tell us more about yourself?

“I’ve lived in France for so long now, I’m probably the most French American you’ll ever meet…. While France has adopted me, I’m British-American with work experience ranging from Singapore and Istanbul to emerging markets like Egypt and Bosnia.

This global outlook has profoundly influenced my career, from roles in international development with the United Nations and World Bank, to client development programs and innovation at Deloitte, expanding technology access to underserved communities at Microsoft, and now to my current role at UiPath, where the profound impact of technology has remained a common thread.

As a Transformation Sales Director at UiPath, I partner with prominent customers in France and across the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region to establish a compelling vision that guides their automation efforts—a “north star” ambition. Then, it’s about engaging with their teams to build a program underpinned by the UiPath Platform and expertise.”

The Strategic Transformation Office (STO) at UiPath ensures customers maximize business outcomes by driving efficiency and innovation through strategic consultation and tailored automation solutions. STO collaborates with clients and partners to assess processes, design strategies, and coordinate with UiPath teams for seamless delivery.

What led you to choose a career in the Strategic Transformation Office?

“The STO team appealed to me because it offers a balance of freedom and structure to engage with our most valued customers. The role blends consultative sales, strategy, business analysis, and organizational effectiveness, providing a unique vantage point on various industry challenges and the impact of megatrends. This comes from working with multiple customers, each bringing their own unique challenges and opportunities. STO allows me to collaborate across UiPath and with partners to tackle these complex challenges. This approach not only drives tailored solutions but also strengthens relationships with our customers, positioning UiPath as a flexible, trusted partner.”

What attracted you to UiPath specifically?

“I was drawn to a unique combination of factors: the innovative technology UiPath offers, its ambitious roadmap, its size, values, and the opportunity to experience the energy and ‘intensity’ of the pre-IPO phase, followed by the quarterly rhythm of a public company.

The commitment to being ‘humble, bold, immersed, and fast’ also really resonated with me, as these values align closely with how I approach challenges and opportunities. UiPath also presented a chance to re-engage with high-growth markets across EMEA, working with customer teams in Johannesburg, Sophia, Warsaw, or Clermont-Ferrand.

From ‘Unlimited Potential’ at Microsoft to ‘making an impact that matters’ at Deloitte, I’ve always been drawn to organizations with a strong collective purpose, and the UiPath mission to accelerate human achievement resonated with me.”

I was drawn to UiPath for its innovative technology, ambitious roadmap, size, values, and mission to accelerate human achievement.

The journey of a Transformation Sales Director at UiPath is one of continuous growth and innovation. As UiPath grows and customer needs become increasingly sophisticated, this role is designed to adapt, ensuring that we stay at the forefront of agentic automation and orchestration.

How has your role evolved since you joined UiPath?

“While core consulting skills remain central to the role, the focus has shifted from helping customers to evolve their automation operating models to building strategic partnerships aligned with the UiPath roadmap.

This shift reflects our commitment to customer-centricity—meeting customers where they are, whether that’s foundational RPA or cutting-edge agentic AI. It’s about understanding the challenges customers face and providing solutions that address these needs today while also preparing for future possibilities.

What could the future of clinical research look like with agentic AI? How might maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations evolve? What new standards could agentic automation set for financial crime compliance? These are the kinds of questions we explore, sometimes all on the same day—an experience that’s rare in most roles. It’s this diversity and the chance to co-create industry-leading solutions with customers that makes the role so unique.”

What has been the most rewarding part of our journey at UiPath?

“The most rewarding part has been identifying gaps and taking ownership to fill them in true startup fashion. I also enjoy understanding customers’ challenges, their organizational structures, and connecting the dots across their strategic initiatives to demonstrate how UiPath can deliver multiple sources of value. Like many roles, it comes with ambiguities, especially as the collision of AI and automation shifts priorities for both customers and UiPath. But it’s remained true to its essence of mobilizing the best of UiPath.”

A role on the STO team at UiPath requires a unique combination of relationship-development, adaptability, collaboration, and strategic thinking. By embodying these qualities and staying ahead of technological advancements, we work together to deliver transformative outcomes for our customers.

What advice would you give to someone considering a role in TSD at UiPath?

“My advice would be to focus on building strong relationships—both internally and externally. Every customer is unique, with different degrees of maturity, varying combinations of stakeholders, and distinct objectives. As a result, the approach to each customer must be adapted to fit their specific context. But that takes trust, which takes time to build.

I think success at UiPath comes from intense curiosity paired with effective collaboration across various teams to drive customer-centric solutions that are tailored to these individual needs. There was a time when we sold robots, but that’s definitely no longer the case.

Equally important is staying on top of technology trends while keeping an eye on some of the broader shifts in business and society to which automation could potentially contribute. We haven’t cracked the code yet, but I personally remain convinced that automation has a huge role to play in helping organizations meet their sustainability goals, for example.”

What is your favorite benefit or perk at UiPath?

Unlimited time off, as this provides a real sense of trust and flexibility [....] But what truly stands out is the collaborative work environment that makes every day engaging.

“It has to be the unlimited time off (flexible holiday policy), as this provides a real sense of trust and flexibility in managing work-life balance. UiPath also offers a strong hybrid work model, allowing for flexibility between remote work and some spectacular office spaces.

Additionally, the lifestyle spending account provides some extra support for personal and wellness-related expenses.

But what stands out is the collaborative work environment that makes every day engaging. People genuinely enjoy working together here—there’s a strong sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.”

Achieving a healthy work-life balance in a demanding role such as a Transformation Sales Director is no easy task. Balancing professional obligations and personal commitments requires constant attention and adaptation.

How do you maintain a work-life balance in a busy environment?

“It’s something I’m always working on. At this stage of life, I focus on trying to be a good dad, a supportive spouse, and keeping closely connected to my aging parents in the U.S.

While it's not easy, I strive to find ways to balance these important aspects of my life with work demands and interests. Every other week, I resolve to get back to the gym—though that rarely happens. That said, the family ski trip in 80 days is non-negotiable. And speaking of perks, I forgot to mention the deals available through our comité d’entreprise (employee’s representative body). With off-season prices and discounts, this might be the year for the first solo ski trip after the family getaway. It’s finding those little moments to recharge.”

What excites you about the future of our role or team at UiPath?

“There’s obviously a huge amount of buzz about AI agents and multi-agent systems, but these need to be orchestrated. UiPath has dedicated over a decade to building an enterprise-grade platform that companies use to run tens of thousands of automations securely. Agents are just the next evolution, and UiPath is uniquely positioned to lead in this space. At the same time, the need for core intelligent automation remains enormous.

What’s most inspiring, though, is the potential of UiPath to help solve some of the world’s most pressing and complex challenges. It’s that belief in what we’re building—and the possibilities it opens up—that tells me I’m exactly where I need to be.”
